 An artist friend of mine used my real face and made me an avatar with beautiful son Lucius. May I use it here? And how do I put it in place?

First, make sure the avatar is no larger than 80 x 80 pixels square. Then you'll need to find a place to host it -- Photobucket is a good option, although there are other image hosting options available. Anyway, once you've done that, you'll be given an URL which you can then use here. Simply go to the top of the page and click "Profile", then scroll all the way down to where it says "Avatar Control Panel" and paste the URL into the empty field next to "Upload Avatar from a URL". Then click "Submit".

If you have any problems, let me know.

Gillian, thanks for the very clear instructions. Now I am trying to reduce my newly made wondrous avatar to the correct size, it being 9x9 and apparently thus unacceptable. Ah, the woes of being computer illiterate. Thanks again. Back when I solve my problem!

Try mypictr. It's a nifty way to resize your avatars online.

My very own avatar, thanks to Gillian!

 WOW! Talk about slow to take instructions! But for the first time I now have a real honest to gosh avatar on the Forum! A new friend made it for me, Malfoy Grandma with son Lucius..... Oh, Lord, how yummy, and due to Gillian's patience and good answers, (it was the mypictr that did it! Simple enough for this old idiot to manage!) here it is! TADA! You can laugh. I think it is hilarious, the artist took my picture, gave me lovely styled white hair (never had it on my best day), fixed my makeup (always necessary), gave me a lovely lacy dress and a gorgeous Malfoy Grandma hat full of feathers, put Lucius in to watch over me, and there it is! What fun! thanks again, Gillian.
