I'm sure the editor of Book World gave my e-mail a gentle tweak or two, but thanks, Helen!
I was puzzled as hell by the word "pricklouse", until I read someplace that vermin often gather in the seams of garments. You see art sometimes depicting the poor delousing their clothing, painstakingly following the seams and crushing things. And of course, that's where tailors work. Low-end tailors, it occurs to me, might also have made more of their living by altering or repairing second-hand clothing.
That's one reason that linens used to be boiled during laundering--it wasn't just for the sake of whiteness, it was to kill guests.
