Don't go gangbusters right away, Heather. Ease yourself into it slowly so as not to cause injury. It's amazing what even a little bit of exercise can do for you at the start, and as you gradually build your endurance and muscle tone, your metabolism will increase too helping you burn fat. I work out three times a week now for just over an hour, and that helps me maintain a trim weight AND has also helped out my crap back. (As long as I don't do any twisting.) Another thing it helped eliminate (and I admit being a bit embarrassed by telling you this) was a hemorrhoid my doctor told me could only by removed by surgery.

BTW, I'm 49 and twenty minutes of my workout is spent running the stairs in my apartment building. I tell ya, if you want a good cardio routine, that's the way to go!
