Switching to administered registration

Post by Hilary the Touched » Wed Feb 16, 2011 1:24 pm

My dear fellow Jason Isaacs fans,
Several of you have tolerantly observed that some of those recently joining our number have, shall we say, only limited interest in Mr. Isaacs. :-|
This board previously required that one register as a member before being allowed to post, but apparently spammers have diligently applied their intellectual energies to cracking the CAPTCHA software designed to prevent them from covering the internet in their, um, offerings, and I am heartily sick and tired of spending all my time on this board deleting lurid ads for bondage porn, so I've changed the setting. From now on membership will require manual confirmation from me.
This is very easy for me to reset if we feel the environment has altered adequately, but in the meantime, it probably means that I will miss some legitimate fans, and for that I apologize in advance. If you're trying, with limited success, to register an account, let me suggest choosing a username with at least some semihuman connection, if not specific Jason Isaacs references; the absence of a link to porn/off-shore gambling/illegal movie download sites; and registering from an IP that does not originate in Ukraine or Russia.
Sorry to make bigoted generalizations, but you can blame your fellow Russians for souring the climate.
Again, my apologies, but this was gettin' waaaay outta hand.

Edited to expand: I've been getting 30+ notifications per day, and I don't even glance at 'em any more. :-| We're going to have to go FanZone on this one: if you'd like to register, you're going to have to send me an e-mail FIRST. Tell me what username you will use, and just to verify that you're not a hideous Spambot, tell me the title of your favourite Jason Isaacs film and why it's your fave (doesn't have to be very long). The e-mail addy is admin at jasonisaacsonline dot com, but format it like an e-mail address.

EDITED AGAIN: with the help of Mr. Touched, I've modified the registration settings so that prospective members must now correctly answer a question before being allowed to register (I had literally 50+ new user alerts yesterday). So we'll see how that works.

Well done, Hilary. It's a great pity that these sort of attacks are becoming so common - and they achieve nothing except annoyance.

Thanks Hilary. (

Of course, now I'll have to get my porn and viruses another way......Image

On a related note, I have a followup question to my "what is a googlebot" thread: how is it that googlebot is a registered user?

Aw guys--
I must divert your gratitude to your ever-diligent moderators, who have been scraping off this crud in my absence and keeping note of names.
And fruitbat, sorry to inconvenience you! I know it must have been nice, to have one-stop shopping here--a little Jason Isaacs news, some boat sales scams, and illicit downloads, all in one place! :-(
Oh well!
