As relatively privileged people, it's constantly surprising how many things (like this) we simply take for granted.
I was recently reminded of the significance of menstrual care supplies: in many parts of the world, girls leave school far earlier than boys, and a huge reason is often the inaccessibility of pads or tampons and sometimes the lack of bathrooms at schools. I just heard a terrible story about a girl in Nepal, who, while sequestered from her family in a cow shed for the duration of her period, was bitten by a venomous snake and later died.

The school I work at, raised money for a school i Congo, far out on the countryside. And when we asked them what would be the fist priority, they said it would be to build girl bathrooms. It's hard to imagine for us, but it's true. One of the main reasons girls in poor countries drop out of school is because the schools don't have bathrooms. So to give more girls education, build girl bathrooms. Sometimes the solutions aren't too complicated... It's possible to do a lot by doing just a little bit.

A number of motorway service areas I have been in recently have had an advert for sponsoring third world toilets on the back of the cubicle doors, so you can't avoid reading them as you sit. They have a simple number to text to donate a small sum. I think it's a really good idea. If enough people do it, they can raise a lot from many small amounts.
