Aw, Jason had trouble with his horse in The Patriot? LOL. Bless him. I saw in one interview where he said he's scared of horses (not sure if he was serious).
I have horses...break, train, and show them myself. Jason did a good job, I thought. A few times (as is always the case with horseback scenes in movies) he and the others seemed to be in their horses' mouths a little too much. But if the horse was being difficult, then that's understandable.
But he fell off? Poor baby. Bad horsie.

I've never seen "bloopers" for the Patriot...they would be interesting..
Yes, Mr Jason was thrown forward off his mount...
He had to learn to ride, a few months before production on the movie
started...the day he was thrown, he said many people where there to
watch, I think it happened from the scene where he yells "Charge"..
He has stated the hardest part of riding was keeping the horse
in the line of the "shot"..I guess, meaning, keep the horse in the
frame of the film....
Mr Jason "claims" 2B afraid of ALL ANIMALS
But, we all know his sense of humor....
He is lucky, that is the same fall that happened to Christopher Reeve..
Look what happened to him...
All of the above info can be found by watching the numerous interviews Mr Jason has done....hopefully, memory serves me correctly

There is a long list at this site.
Just do a search for The Patriot

One scene I remember well is when Tavington went to question the sole survivor of British troop escorting Gabriel, his collar kept moving over/under the leather belt in successive frames.

JI was almost certainly taught some rudimentary riding while at drama school, and he spent a fair amount of time on horseback in Dragonheart.
He does make frequent joking references to his fear and loathing of animals; while almost certainly exaggerated, if he didn't have pets etc. as a kid, that's not surprising.
I used to ride, though never particularly well; I suffered three "falls", two of which left me standing upright beside the horse. I have NO IDEA how that happened, what position my person assumed in the interim .
Perhaps that's the kind of toss JI got. The Patriot must have been a hellish shoot for riders, trying to accommodate 'blocking' their horses and following director's instructions and looking spontaneous and avoiding artillery and . . .
Luv, I've seen screencaps which make the position of his feet in the stirrups look pretty dodgy!

The scene that I saw was when there was a lot of gunfire which spooked the horse. The horse jumped up and Jason fell down. Dick Clark called a trooper and that he got back on the horse.
oh he was hitting on Mel. Commenting on his looks. Flubbed a line I guess.
The show was called American's Funniest Bloopers and Practical Jokes. (I think)

Yeah..heels DOWN, man! LOL. Although it isn't like he's prissing across a show ring anyway. He's fighting a frickin' war...so I won't rag on his equitation too badly. And in all honesty, his upper body position was very nice! Straight back, shoulders square. How difficult it must have been. Tavington is supremely confident in himself in everything he does...most especially riding a horse I would think since he's a dragoon. Jason had to convey that.Hilary the Touched wrote:Luv, I've seen screencaps which make the position of his feet in the stirrups look pretty dodgy!
Oh...and Re: Christopher Reeves. He was thrown over a jump on a cross-country course in Culpeper, Va. I didn't know that until I was walking the course (before competing over it the following day) and our guide informs us. Great!
I'm glad Jason wasn't hurt. I often wonder about actors and horses. Learning to ride isn't easy for everyone...and riding like Jason had to ride isn't easy for anyone.

Thanks for calling it to our attention, anon--we'll have to keep an eye out!
Luv, I never ever got good enough to even think of competing in ANYthing, but I enjoy watching--sorry I missed you when you were just down the road in Culpeper!
There are so many things that are important to good riding, and achieving some sort of rapport with your mount must be especially challenging when you're on a "rental", as it were.

Twas years ago when I was in Culpeper!
Yeah, I know those horses are desensitized to gun and cannon fire probably, but they're still gonna spook now and then when they aren't expecting it. We're talking about an animal with a brain the size of a walnut.
Jason did extremely well considering everything I think. And let's face it...he looks realy purdy sitting up there. Nothing like a handsome man on a horse!
