I disagree that it was not meant to be funny. It was meant to be a black comedy. I read the book too, and that's certainly a black comedy. The screenplay is also written by the author of the novel, Colin Bateman.
Great to see David Thewlis and Jason together pre Harry Potter.
I loved the misunderstanding that led to the title, and the "nun" with a gun.

It's a black comedy, and I think it's meant to be as funny as it is. Jason talking in the DVD extras that he was laughing when he read the script.
This was the first Jason-movie I saw, but I didn't know at the time that it was "him". I saw this even before the patriot. I like it, it's quite funny, I think. And the nun with the gun is my favorite scene.
