I don't like Matt Damon (don't ask me why) and don't like movies about the war in Iraq, but will watch "Green Zone" anyway only because I really want to see our Jason on screen!

Angel, I'm right there with you. The only role that I've liked of Damon's was The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Universal Pictures' website has it listed in its "Future Releases" section, under the title Green Zone and with a release date of March 12. There's a synopsis together with link to a ginormous close-up of Matt Damon, for those who enjoy that sort of thing.

Sounds nothing like the book it was supposed to be taken from.

A few things came to me in my sleep last night.

I wonder how Jason feels about having another part cut so drastically? If we are upset imagine how he must feel.

Since they have changed the plot so much, did Greg Kinnear and Amy Ryan also get cut? Seems like Matt Damen also took over their roles.

Not knowing much about the business, is this something common? Does it happen a lot? Inquiring minds want to know.

Grannybear, I'm on-again-off-again reading the book, and I think what Greengrass has taken from it is the bizarre dichotomy between what was occurring in the Green Zone and what went on in the rest of the country.
The GZ was full of absurdly young, sometimes idealistic, people with little practical experience; academics who'd never been to the middle east; and contractors who were just in it to make the biggest bucks.
The rest of the country had frustrated, terrified citizens and desperate troops (on both sides), but their realities seldom merged.

As for how common this is, I think it goes on all the time. How many times have you seen an ad for a DVD and thought, "I don't remember that being at theatres"? JI's entire role was cut from Crash. On the other hand, he got the roles in Passionada and Dragonheart after other actors pulled out.
So yeah, I bet there's plenty. Jason Isaacs is the only actor I follow, and who reads about movies that didn't succeed??

Hilary--I read the book twice. Once when it first came out and then again when Jason was cast. I don't believe the movie is supposed to follow the book. Just parts were taken from it. After all the book wasn't a drama. It's supposed to be a factual account of what happened there. An odd moment in history.
Thanks for your input. It's good to hear someone else's take on things.

I'm impressed that you read it, Grannybear--it wasn't information that a lot of people were seeking out. :-| Many are already forecasting doom for the movie, insisting that American movie-goers don't want to see it on screen either.
I hope they're wrong.
Jason Isaacs said that the director was a pal, and it sounded like the decision to insert him wasn't originally an intrinsic part of his vision for the movie, so . . . maybe it just didn't mesh well.

If you want a bit of a laugh, go Google David O'Hara--he's the actor who was originally slated to play Charlie Beck. A romantic lead he ain't!
