Boston Globe rates non-Yank actors' accents

Post by Hilary the Touched » Wed Nov 12, 2008 10:18 am

The Boston Globe had an article rating the *scads!* of non-American actors currently playing Americans on television: http://www.boston.com/ae/tv/blog/2008/1 ... on_is.html

Jason Isaacs got an A-, better than Jason Clarke--but the Globe says, "His DeNiro is on the money." Whoops.

Hilary, I posted an article under BH season 3, that gave Kudos to
Mr Jason's accent...LOL I've moved it to this thread...

Kudos to Mr Jason for his RI accent

I don't think he sounds like DeNiro at all...oh well...

Robert DeNiro = quintessential New Yorker + Italian descent

Michael Caffee = quintessential Rhode Islander + Irish descent

Yeah, I can see how they'd sound the same. Not!
I'm sitting here trying to eke out a living as a freelance math editor, and this guy gets good pay for writing nonsense. Go figure. :scratch

Okay, don't hurt me guys, but... the first time I saw Brotherhood... IthoughthesoundedlikeDeniro! aaa.gif
But after watching for a while, I started hearing a big difference. I think the similarities are in the inflections but that's where it ends. I live in Connecticut, not far from NYC, and I have a bro in Providence (not Michael, sadly), and I'll tell you from first hand experience, that there are similarities between the two accents.
NYC and Providence aren't that far from each other, after all! ;-)

I see it more in the face than the voice -- facial expressions mostly -- but not with any recurring frequency.

I've never said to myself though, "Gee, he sounds just like DeNiro!", cause it's a pretty specific accent and one that's damned hard to nail.

Jason also does a darn good Texas accent.....much better sounding than my own. :lol
"Let me tell you something Sarg'nt.....when we get on a 5 yard line, you boys are gonna need my Rangers. So y'all better learn to be team players....We're done here."
Kudos to JI on his talent. :hands :hands :hands :adore
(P.S. I didn't know Damian Lewis was also English.....he did a really good Maine accent in 'Dreamcatcher', playing Jonesy.)

Marilaine, CPT Mike Steele was, famously, Georgian.

Don't worry, Marilaine. I'm a Nawthener, so Southern accents all sound very much the same to me. Might just be my sense of hearing.

Not to mention that Georgia is a good-sized state with many dialects. I'm from Georgia, even lived for a while at Fort benning - where JI trained for the part! - and I didn't recognize his accent at first. So no worries ML!
