Providence will be the setting for new TV pilot

Another TV series set in Providence is in the works.

According to a report in the trade publication Variety, CBS has ordered a pilot called Waterfront that will star Joe Pantoliano as the mayor of Providence. A spokesman for CBS said the pilot will be shot in Rhode Island.

Pantoliano, probably best known for playing Ralph Cifaretto on The Sopranos -- his head memorably ended up in a bowling bag -- recently starred in two other TV series, Dr. Vegas and The Handler.

The Rhode Island Film and Television Office has scheduled a news announcement at noon today at the State House that will include Pantoliano and Jack Orman, writer and executive producer for the show. (Orman's past writing credits include ER, Jag and Dr. Vegas).

Steven Feinberg, director of the state's Film and Television Office, declined to comment on any details about Waterfront until today's announcement.

The one-hour drama will star Pantoliano as Mayor Jimmy Centrella, described by The Hollywood Reporter, another trade journal, as "the wildly charismatic and ethically challenged mayor of Providence."

The CBS spokesman said the Waterfront pilot will probably be made this spring. Then it's up to the network to decide whether to order additional episodes and put the show on the air.

The network spokesman said CBS ordered about 20 pilots last year. About five made it onto the air in the fall, with another three picked up as midseason replacements.

Providence and politics are combined in another TV series, Brotherhood, which was shot entirely in Rhode Island last year. Brotherhood, about two brothers on opposite sides of the law, is scheduled to debut on Showtime in June.

Man! Did they really hafta mention that it was filmed last year? That just makes it sound like there's something wrong with it.
"Well, if it was shot last year, how come they haven't shown it yet? What's wrong with it?"

grrrrrrrr
