DVD release

Post by thunder » Fri Jan 19, 2018 12:38 pm

In UK, and region 2.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-Stalin-D ... +of+stalin

February 26.

That's before the Norwegian cinema premiere. So I preordered the DVD, and then I'll bring some people with me to see it at the cinema. Good plan. :D

BTW, I just discovered Denmark and Sweden get cinema premiere in February. That's discrimination! :rave

Edit: And I realized, I'm teaching the cold war in my history lessons around that time. Maybe I'll bring my two history classes as well. Even better plan! If the county won't pay, I'll pay! (50 more people!!!)

Too much savigning blanc tonight? I think I go over drive on exclamation marks....

thunder, February's long before those of us in the US get to see it. So that's double discrimination!!

Kind of unusual to release the DVD before US theatrical release.

My work friend told me that it's supposed to be released in the US around March 9th - or something like that. He really wants to see it, so I think that I won't have to do too much research to find out when it will hit the theaters here. hahahaha!

I just found this... but no exact dates/theaters info yet.

Every time I look at that picture of the medals I laugh. He won’t be sneaking up on anyone!

Marie, I suddenly flashed on my two dogs racing down the hallway with all their "medals" jingling away...

No

I watched it. It’s quite dark, and more serious than my impression was from reading reviews, etc. It’s very good, but I have to write more tomorrow. It’s getting late over here...

So it's not entirely a comedy? The trailers sure make it out to be a rip-snorting laugh-fest. I'll know after tomorrow night.

Yes, it’s a comedy, but it’s also very serious. So you laugh, but feel guilty for laughing in a way. From the reviews I read, I didn’t really expect it to be so thought provoking at the same time. Very good movie!

The events themselves are for the most part not funny, although some are absurd. It's the reactions of everyone involved that produce the comedy - party officials jockeying for position whilst simultaneously not wanting anyone else to know, and everyone claiming to be the most loyal to Stalin while all really hating him for one reason or another. Everyone is so scared of Stalin they are almost paralysed when it comes to making a decision after he dies.

Then Jason arrives...

"Paralysis" is an excellent word to use.
In a heartbreaking fashion, the movie really illuminates the depth of Stalin's oppression--people so internalized it that it shriveled all their emotional experiences.
But I laughed and laughed. The pacing and editing was brilliant. I'll have to see it again--in addition to being delivered so quickly, characters were often filmed from behind, making it additionally difficult to process the accents... *repeated viewing: oh no!
Zhukov was just like walking testosterone in a greatcoat. Yow!
