I'm sitting at the front of the room (a.) I got there after most of the other seats had been snagged and b.) my eyesight ain't what it used to be) so I didn't see the response of the rest of the class--but the movie is old enough now that I guess a significant portion of the 19 to 20-year olds may have missed it, and bypassed it on TV . . . one of my table-mates recalled having seen it, but she described it as a "Mel Gibson movie." We hope to disabuse her of that notion!

Sadly, while I know a bit about a decade or so in American history, much of the rest is a near-total blank, so I will have to get to work soon.

I gave my students the task of reviewing any film they wanted, and one student actually reviewed The Patriot. That surprised me because it's quite old (from their point of view), and even though a lot of people in Norway have seen it, it's not that much talked about now a days. (The student is 18) But of course. before that I had showed a clip of Jason in every lesson for three weeks. Maybe I had brainwashed him... ?

It says something about Jasons's versatility that none of the students noticed!

Actually, it would probably be hard pulling them off of each other, what with Tav being a muggle and Lucius hating him on principle alone. And we all know how military types feel about dudes with nice, long blonde hair... It would probably be an ugly scene;

Ahh, Tavington is way better than Lucius (that arrogant pure blood, LMAO!). Tavvy isn't a wizard but he has military skills.

They're both self-righteous, always thinking they're doing good for a "higher power". Only difference is Lucius was under the influence of the Dark Lord, and went to prison for him, whereas Tavington never suffered any kind of imprisonment (although, merely trying to please his "Dark Lord" was imprisonment enough)

They're both self-righteous, always thinking they're doing good for a "higher power".

Yeah Tavington wanted to win the war at all costs and he had a reason to want it. But I don't think he did what he did for a higher power. He was more guided by a selfish interest...in exchange for winning and capturing the ghost, he would receive a part of the land of Ohio (he had nothing to go back to in England, let's not forget that Tavvy's father squandered his life). So he took the war to a personal level.

I'm sorry, Angel. But realistically, all the military skills in the world won't stand up to the Crusiatus curse.

I'm afraid that Lucius has the edge in this case.

You're so right, Angel. Our Colonel was fighting for a reward for himself and to redeem the honor of the Tavington name. By his own words, he "advanced himself only through victory". He was bitter and had a lot on his shoulders, poor guy.

This has probably been posted about 20 times in this thread alone, but I can't be arsed to go look--here is a funny and elucidating site about the alleged inspiration for Tavington, Col. Banastre Tarleton:
Oatmeal for the Foxhounds. It points out that Ban managed to lose his (substantial) inheritance all by himself, irresponsible young rake.

I'm afraid I didn't do too terribly well with that assignment (though it was only for extra credit)--I kinda got bogged down in the first question, "How historically accurate was the movie?" Two single-spaced pages later, it was after 1 a.m., and I had to quit.
Here's a single random tidbit--near the beginning of the movie, you know how Tavington addresses Martin's workers, explaining that the King promised liberty for all who would fight for Britain (true, though many of those people later ended up on somebody else's plantation in the Indies), but said workers meekly protest that they are not slaves, but "freedmen"? Chances are that you snorted in derision when you first watched that scene, but check it out: in Revolutionary America, 1763 to 1800 Purvis includes a table titled "Composition of the Southern Colonies' [and I would include South Carolina in that category!] Population, 1774" which gives the population of "legally free Black Inhabitants" as
1.2%.
How likely is it that Martin's got four of them??
