WAY O/T: Natasha Richardson injured in skiing accident

It sucks. It just flat out effing sucks.

Many, many condolences to the world (especially her closest loved ones) for this loss.

I saw this on TMZ today and my heart just aches for them.

It is so shocking that she got up and walked away from the fall, and a few days later, she's gone. Her poor children.

Think of how many falls you've taken. (I've always been a klutz). Think of how close you may have come to the same thing.
I feel so bad for her and her family. To think you are ok and then have this happen.

My first thought was Meredith Vieira (sp?) on the Today Show. During a demonstration with Will Ferrell on the Rockefeller Center ice rink, the stunt went wrong and Meredith fell on her back and smacked her head on the hard ice. She said, "That HURT! That really hurt!" Luckily for her, she's fine. So sorry for Natasha Richardson and her family.

Her death has brought new attention on what many have been saying for a while now -- that helmets save lives, specifically in the case of skiers, where no such mandate currently exists.

I foresee them enacting "Natasha's Law" because of it.

It is so sad that a tragedy such as this has to happen before laws are passed and I agree Gillian, you will see this occur.

So much pain for this lovely family.

They say a helmet would not have helped since she didn't hit her head. That it was probably the shock waves (?) when she landed.

I think that...since she was in the beginners' slope or something like that...a helmet was not required, because it wasn't a huge slope...
I'm still so sad and shocked about this. Poor Liam and her children. Her whole family must be devastated.

Grannybear, the coroner states she died because of an epidural hematoma sustained as a result of blunt force impact to the head, not because of shock waves. Although that was certainly one of the theories being tossed around before they were able to do the autopsy.

Yes, this is horribly sad.

An epidural hematoma is when a artery in the head bleeds. Unlike a vein, which will stop bleeding and form a clot, the arteries are under pressure and you continue to push blood into the cranium between the lining of the brain and the skull. Unfortunately, this is why you are ok for a while, but then go rapidly downhill and about 20% of people die from the condition. There is nowhere for the blood to go and the pressure on the brain tissue results in brain damage and death.

I am devastate for Liam and his family. This is so senseless it breaks my heart.

It´s always a tragedy to loose someone who is so beloved and the way she died so unexpected is more tragic

The senseless of her death makes it so unbeliveable... Life is so unfaire sometimes...

She had been a great Actress and she really will be missed

It's really tragic. To loose a partner and a mother..
And yes, I think too that she will be missed.
