screen play vs. novel!

Post by malfoygrandma » Fri Mar 19, 2010 8:03 am

;-) Well, we ought to look at the book for a series of weekly shows, so perhaps we might get an episode based on each chapter, instead of the whole story all in just an hour pilot! that would spread out lots of goodies about Mack and the cops, Mack and the Mafia guys, Mack and his stupid kid, Mack and his mean exwife, Mack and the black account lady, Mack and....on and on..... This way the one novel is the basis for an entire year of suspense, with does the bad cop stop Mack's work of investigating the big theft, and all that sort of jazz.... Think small, aim small.... advice from Mel Gibson to his young boys murdering British officers in The Patriot!

I just hope this doesn't turn into another case of the week lawyer show.
Grannybear - if Jason is "the lawyer" I don't care!!! :D But this looks more like a character driven show than a story driven show (L&O is story driven).

We shall just have to wait and see!!

One storyline that won't be believable was that Mack hadn't been 'getting any' from the ladies and resorted to 'helping himself' in his lonely little bathroom now and then.

 :D

I think that will be something from the novel, that just won't fit with
Jason's character

You know that Jason will have several love interests. Of course he does like to play offbeat characters. We'll have to wait and see.

guilt!

Post by malfoygrandma » Fri Mar 19, 2010 12:30 pm

 To many of us old-time Catholics or former ones, the title of this novel is very interesting. It is often pointed out that Catholicism is a cult of guilt! So the title "Pleading Guilty" applies especially to the main character who tells the story from his own point of view. And no matter what he does or says, he is ruled by guilt. That makes the point of how important his religious upbrings is to Mack and how much even as he wishes to escape it, he is under its psychological power! Very good piece of writing, even if they do not use it in the pilot or series!

Or Fox TV . . . or any major network for that matter.

Hm, I believe that playing this character will be a nice challenge for him :D
I'm sure he will do good.

They may just infer it. There doesn't have to be any graphic depiction.

Well, Seinfeld got away with every euphemism for it ("master of my domain"), so yeah I guess so.

Hate to change such an interesting subject but..............

Do you think the show will be done in first person narrative like the book?

I finished the book a couple of days ago and have been thinking it over ever since. As this is going to be a series I feel that it will have the essence of the book. He will still be hunting for the missing partner but all else from the book will be changed or dropped out. I find this happens a lot when a book is transferred to the screen.

Of course Mack could hide the money and Martin knows he did but can't prove it and that would be a continuing source of friction between them. Just a thought. Oh there are so many possibilities.

From the tiny bit we've learned about the filming it's nothing like the book ...so far.

But who knows.....
