October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Post by Hilary the Touched » Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:04 pm

and one of our members is participating in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Campaign to raise funds to help support the ACS in its research and education campaigns.
I hope she won't mind my posting this here--it's true that this has nothing to do with Jason Isaacs, but sadly many of us will have more contact with this disease sometime during our lives than we ever will with Jason Isaacs, so I think it's perfectly reasonable to address it. If you'd like to pledge any amount to this campaign, here's the link to the page of the Team, which is called the Treasured Chests (arrh!):
http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/Makin ... g1.app310b
Any amount is welcome!

(And don't forget to schedule your mammograms, Grils, as well as performing your self-exams! We now return you to our regularly scheduled, more whimsical programming.)

Thanks Hilary for reminding me.
I remember in High School they used to make us wear a pink shirt (or something pink) because of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
And in my Draping class they were telling us that there's going to be a walk to support that cause.
Again thanks Hilary! *hugs*

this actually affects me tremendously....without medical insurance,
I cannot have my yearly mamogram....when I've tried to get
assistance, they said no, because I have an IRA account....

so I'll have to wait to get tested...and that scares me....

Kim, don't give up.
Call your county, try your local ACS, and see if there are any mobile screening opportunities or something.
If all else fails, call a place that offers the test and ask for the cash cost. It probably won't be a happy number, but it may be less than you think--since they won't have to hassle for insurance, and they'll receive payment immediately, they may be more accommodating than you anticipate.
If not, well, spread the word to your pals and relatives--this would probably be a birthday gift that you can put to better use than several others!

Hilary, bringing attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month is exactly what one should do . . . here and everwhere. And not just breast cancer. We all need to be reminded to be tested, to watch for symptoms, to eat right, exercise regularly, and to stop smoking or just never start.

Now I sound like a PSA.

Oh yes, Kim, please do something! My friend didn't see a doc when her abdomen became painful, because she had no insurance. Now, she's getting radiation treatments for Insulinoma.

I agree, our health insurance system really bites the big one, and I could go on and on about it. I hope that the next administration can implement something more effective... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'm getting my boobs smooshed for the first time this year... joy!
