Mistress, you Brits do make us laugh.
As Bill Bryson says in his hilarious Notes from a Small Island, "If you mention in the pub that you intend to drive from, say, Surrey to Cornwall, a distance that most Americans would happily go to get a taco . . . "
Catloveyes (I don't think she'll mind my revealing this) traveled from Chicago to Myrtle Beach, SC (a distance of approximately 950 miles), to see Jason Isaacs play golf. I drove from Washington, DC, to New Bedford, MA (~450 miles) for the premiere of Passionada--and Jason Isaacs wasn't even there!!
As for lacking transport, bollocks!! Take a train into Victoria and hop on the Underground. If the event finishes too late at night for you to arrive home comfortably, find a B&B--I like the Ridgemount Hotel, which is very close to a tube station; it's inexpensive and the proprietors are very considerate and helpful and will ensure that you get back to the train station okay the next morning.
("Lacking transport." Tchuh. No, living in Montana 29 miles from the nearest town, which has neither bus nor any train service--THAT'S lacking transport.)
